the expanding world of engineers
28 January 2009 1:53:00 AM

Engineers of today are no longer identified as someone who repairs, construct or manufacture. They, together with the world, have stepped up the pace in constantly improving and generating creative ideas in tackling the needs of the modern world.

People begin to realise that engineers now take up a more leading role such as providing consultations to the client, managing manpower and researching on new technologies. This is where education comes into play.

According to Professor Seeram Ramakrishna’s article, he said that through education, engineers learn to analytically review complicated problems and by applying the knowledge they have gained to come up with possible solutions. His statement here implies that engineers through learning have evolved from the past to where they are now.

In Singapore, the education an engineer received is more toward self exploration learning. There are very little spoon feeding and theory based teaching. Here, education has become more hands on where engineers get to experiment various types of situations and formulating the best outcome in the shortest possible time. They too have learnt to be more organised in their work and are able to manage large scale projects.

Apart from education, engineers progresses through trial and error, failures and case studies. Take for example, the collapse of the World Trade Centre, Hotel New World in Singapore and the recent Sichuan earthquake.

Through thorough examination of the World Trade Centre, they were able to determine its structural inconsistence in the design of the building as well as in the construction phrase. This applies the same for Hotel New World where there were additional electrification faults that adds up to the collapse. In addition, engineers are racking their brains to invent a type of early earthquake warning device where it would be installed underground to monitor the plates movement so as to detect the potential of an incoming earthquake.

Gradually, as the world is being modernise with advance technologies together with the discovering of new materials, engineers could eventually put an end to global warming. On the country, breakthroughs made in all areas could provide engineers the stepping stone to solve environmental issues that would reduce the impact of human activities towards the nature, prevention of endangered species from extinction and finding an alternative to replace the depleting of natural resources.
